Live Jazz : Trad to Modern

Babylon

Featuring:

Ted Quinlan: Guitar + Composition
Shirantha Beddage: Bari Sax
Scott Metcalf: Piano
Scott Kemp: Bass
Riley O’Connor: Drums

Recorded April 10, 2012

The latest “bootleg” recording from the Gallery on my Zoom H2. I felt this first read-through performance of a 3/4 ballad by Ted Quinlan turned out beautifully.

Donna Lee (Charlie Parker)

As performed by The Humber Alumni Group

Shirantha Beddage: Bari Sax
Tom Juhas: Guitar
Scott Metcalf: Piano
Mark Cashion: Bass
Riley O’Connor: Drums

Recorded Jan 10, 2012

This was the final number of our opening set at The Gallery Studio Cafe, recorded on a Zoom H2 on a table in front of the stage. Shirantha wanted to increase the challenge by changing keys every chorus. Mark suggested against it- we probably got a good first take as a result! Donna Lee is a classic Charlie Parker bebop tune that set a high performance standard for future generations of musicians including Jaco Pastorius.

Humber Alumni Free Jam

Featuring:

Scott Metcalf: Piano
Ed Sweetman: Bass
Patrice Barbanchon: Trumpet
Riley O’Connor: Drums

Christian Anderson: Recording/Mixing

This was our first completely improvisational “free” tune at The Open Jazz Jam @ The Gallery Studio Cafe. It was my idea and I’m very happy with the result!

Ed had admittedly never played “free jazz” before, yet courageously dove right in. Patrice suggested that we start with whole notes- pick any note! Soon things started to sound “Milesy”- thanks in part to Christian’s recording style and Patrice’s haunting trumpet playing. Later on in the tune I find the Chick Corea in Scott Metcalf’s playing really shines through, and inspires me to respond with some Roy Haynes type ideas similar to interactions on Chick’s “Trio Music” album. But that’s just part of it… its futile to over-analyze freely improvised music… Sometimes it just happens!

Have patience with this one if you’re not used to free jazz- in time the truth reveals itself…

This is a “first take” read-through performance of a new composition by Ed Sweetman. I’m looking forward to featuring Ed’s music more frequently at The Gallery. For more music from Ed click here- Modern Jazz: Perspectives
